Read the book before but just saw the movie. Was wondering what the movie was gonna be like and how they would make it into a movie. Turns out its more like a documentary explaining some of the case studies found in the book.
I wouldn’t say either is better than other and it worthwhile reading/watching both as the cases are all very though provoking reading/watching the issues again in another media gives you another layer to them.
Many of my friends don’t like the whole freakonomics idea, as they think its just very random and seems to carry no point or ending. Since freakonomics is usually categorized as a “business” book, people expect it to have a clear take away or teach you something concrete.
I really like freaknomics. It is one of the rare non-fiction/business books that I successfully read cover to cover. I like it for all the opposite reasons to my friends.
Its not teaching me something concrete. Most business books have one or two good ideas and the rest is just “sandbagging”. I guess no one is gonna buy a paragraph. Instead freaknomics is about how totally random case studies can be “linked” thru freaknomics
More importantly, freaknomics opening up my mind to what “if”. I’ve always been the sort of person that is naturally curious. I like to ask questions and ponder why stuff is they way they are and how they became this way (causation). Freaknomics shows that sometime causation could be quite far away and might not only be not obvious but does’t seem related at all. e.g. could crime rate decline really be associated with abortion laws?
I also think most people aren’t very comfortable with the “freaknomic unknown”, the maybes and what ifs of things that seem normal or unrelated. I love being surprised with unexpected “unknowns” and finding hidden links between things.
I believe being a good product manager is about not only appreciating details but also understanding the though process that the designer went thru to create the details. Each good design or feature exists because of a reason, and only by understanding why it was there is one able to learn to replicate or be inspired by idea in your own work.
