When i first got my time capsule I made sure that it was self upgradeable as I knew I would to increase the hard drive space in the future. Knowing that it could be upgraded, I got the cheaper 500GB model as the 1TB model had a bit too much apple tax.
Two and bit years forward and I finally opened up my time capsule and upgraded it to 2TB. In short it was relatively painless. It was easy to take apart, change the drive and put back together.
I love my time capsule as I had never done any backup’ing before and with TC’s auto backup’ing thru wifi I can safely know that if I ever lose or trash my macbook pro, all my data from the night before is on my TC. All I need to do is get a replacement mac and after reloading it with my last backup everything will be fine.
Is the time capsule worth it? You can really put a price on your data, but I do agree that its priced a bit high (if you break it down its just a router, HK$400, and a hard drive, HK$850 for 2TB, so HK$3688 is a bit on the high side)
I’m happy with my small DIY project, not only did I get to save some money by buying the base model in the past, but also upgrading it to 2TB (not to mention its pretty fun to “hack” stuff)
After some research I hard drive I chose for this upgrade is the Western Digital wd20evds which is one of their green line HDs which use less power.
